The secret proceedings in the Dreyfus case, the limitatiorms established for and during the Zola trial, offend our sense of justice; but the former are probably a necessary part of militarism, and In 1898 Zola intervened in the Dreyfus Affair—that of a Jewish French army officer, Alfred Dreyfus, whose wrongful conviction for treason in 1894 sparked a 12-year controversy that deeply divided French society. At an early stage in the proceedings Zola had decided rightly that Dreyfus was innocent. To avoid jail time, Zola fled to England, and stayed there until the French Government collapsed; he continued to defend Dreyfus. Four years after the letter was published, Zola died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a blocked chimney.

J’accuse, (French: “I accuse”) celebrated open letter by Émile Zola to the president of the French Republic in defense of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer who had been accused of treason by the French army. It was published in the newspaper L’Aurore on Jan. 13, 1898.

The letter, which began with Emile Zola återvände under kollapsen av regeringen och fortsatte att försvara Dreyfus, som var i fängelse på en helvetisk straffkoloni i Sydamerika som vi känner igen som Djävulsön. Frankrike blev djupt splittrat i Dreyfus … Dreyfus was there and Anatole France, who delivered an oration in Zola’s praise. ‘Zola’, he said, ‘deserves well of his country for not having lost faith in its ability to rule by law’ and concluded, ‘he was a moment in the history of human conscience.’ Rumours were rife that Zola had been murdered.
